This haunting image captures the Woolwich Hulks, a once infamous site in English history located in the Thames Estuary near London. In the mid-1800s, the hulks served as makeshift prisons for convicts awaiting transportation to Australia or penal servitude in Britain. The overcrowded and unsanitary conditions on board these old ships led to high mortality rates, with many convicts succumbing to disease and malnutrition. The photo shows the burial ground adjacent to the hulks, where pauper funerals for the deceased convicts were held. The ground, now overgrown and covered in weeds, bears testament to the tragic lives of those who were once confined within the hulks' cramped quarters.
