This striking photograph captures a pivotal moment in European history: the surrender of Emperor Napoleon III of France (1808-1873) to Kaiser Wilhelm I of Prussia (1797-1888) on September 2, 1870, following the Battle of Sedan. The Franco-Prussian War, which began in July 1870, marked the end of the Second French Empire and the beginning of the German Empire. Napoleon III, dressed in a dark military uniform with a red sash, is seen bowing before Wilhelm I, who is seated on a white horse and wearing a red and gold Prussian military uniform. The defeated French emperor's hands are raised in submission, while Wilhelm I holds a sword in one hand and a white flag in the other. The Prussian king's horse is led by a soldier, and the scene is set against a backdrop of rolling hills and trees.
