The Dunkerque was part of the French Navy's Dunkerque-class battleships, which also included the Strasbourg and Richelieu. These ships were designed to counter the growing naval threat posed by Germany and Italy in the Mediterranean and the North Sea. The battleships were named after major French cities, reflecting the national pride and patriotism of the time.
