EDITORS COMMENTS
Village of Sille, Turkey: A Snapshot of Coexistence and Loss Nestled amidst the rolling hills of Cappadocia, the quaint Village of Sille (also known as Sylley) once bore witness to a unique blend of cultures and languages. Circa 1910, this photograph captures a moment in time when the village was still home to a thriving Greek community, who had lived in peaceful coexistence with their Turkish neighbors in Konya for over 800 years. The upper portion of the card offers a panoramic view of the picturesque village, with its whitewashed houses and terraced vineyards carved into the soft volcanic rock. But it is the lower section of the card that holds a poignant story. Here, a group of Greek women are seen engaged in their daily activities, their faces reflecting the rich history and traditions of their community. However, this idyllic scene was not to last. In the aftermath of the population exchanges between Greece and Turkey in 1923/24, all of the Greeks were forced to leave the village. The Cappadocian Greek language, spoken in Sille for generations, was silenced. The photograph serves as a poignant reminder of a time when different communities lived in harmony, and of the human cost of historical events that continue to shape the world today. This image, captured around the turn of the 20th century, offers a glimpse into a world that has since vanished, leaving behind only memories and the echoes of a once vibrant and diverse community.
