EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph, taken by renowned war correspondent and photographer G.H. Davis for the Illustrated London News in 1940, showcases the four principal types of German tanks during the Second World War. The image is divided into two sections, each with two tanks. On the left side, we see the lighter German tanks. At the top, a light tank of the short type is depicted. This model, while still armored and armed with a gun, was designed for faster movement and greater mobility than the heavier tanks. Below it is a long type light tank, which boasted an extended hull and longer track length, providing better off-road performance and increased carrying capacity. On the right side of the photograph, we find the heavier German tanks. The top tank is a light medium tank, which combined the armor and firepower of a medium tank with the maneuverability of a light tank. At the bottom, a heavy medium tank is shown. This formidable vehicle was heavily armored and armed with multiple guns, making it a formidable force on the battlefield. The use of double tracks on all tanks allowed for better traction and transportability, enabling the German military to deploy these powerful weapons effectively in various terrains. This spread in the Illustrated London News served as a testament to the evolving nature of warfare during the Second World War and the importance of armored vehicles in modern warfare.
