EDITORS COMMENTS
In this striking black-and-white photograph, we find Clarissa Tennant, later known as Mrs. Adrian Bethell, gracefully posing for the cover of Tatler magazine in 1915. Born in 1896 as Clarissa Madeleine Georgiana Felicite Tennant, she was the daughter of the 1st Baron Glenconner, making her a prominent figure in British high society. This portrait captures Clarissa at the pivotal moment of her life, just before her marriage to her first husband, Adrian Bethell. The year 1915 marked the end of an era, as it was the last summer that saw the grand tradition of debutantes being presented at court. The looming threat of the Great War was about to disrupt this long-standing custom, making Clarissa's appearance on the Tatler cover a poignant reminder of a bygone era. Clarissa's beauty was legendary, with Barbara Cartland, the famous romance novelist, once declaring her as "the most beautiful woman I had ever seen." Her captivating presence and elegant demeanor are evident in this photograph, which showcases her in an exquisite gown, adorned with intricate beading and lace. Throughout her life, Clarissa married three times, first to Adrian Bethell (divorced 1918), then to Major Lionel Tennyson, and finally to James Beck. This photograph, taken at the beginning of her journey, stands as a testament to her timeless beauty and the opulence of the era. This evocative image offers a glimpse into the world of the upper classes during the early 20th century, a time of grandeur, tradition, and impending change. The photograph, with its historical significance and aesthetic appeal, continues to captivate viewers and provide a window into the past.
