EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcolored copperplate stipple engraving depicts the Superb Lyrebird, Menura novaehollandiae, a native Australian bird renowned for its elaborate courtship display. The illustration is taken from the "Dictionnaire de Sciences Naturelles: Ornithologie" (Dictionary of Natural Sciences: Ornithology), published in Paris between 1816 and 1830. The work was directed by Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin and engraved by Massard, with the illustration itself being the creation of Jean Gabriel Pretre. Pretre was a painter of natural history at Empress Josephine's zoo and later became an artist at the Museum of Natural History in Paris. The intricate detail and vibrant colors in this engraving are a testament to Pretre's skill as an artist. The Superb Lyrebird is shown in its full glory, with its distinctive black and white plumage, long tail feathers, and elaborate fan-like leg feathers. This engraving is part of a larger work that was published by F.G. Levrault and is considered a significant contribution to the field of zoology during the early 19th century. The "Dictionnaire de Sciences Naturelles: Ornithologie" was a comprehensive reference work that documented a wide range of bird species, many of which were newly discovered during European exploration and colonization of various parts of the world. The Superb Lyrebird is native to the eastern and northeastern parts of Australia and is known for its elaborate courtship display, which involves mimicking a wide range of sounds, including those of other birds, insects, and even rainforest sounds. This engraving provides a beautiful and accurate record of this remarkable bird, capturing its unique features and intriguing behavior for future generations to appreciate.
