EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning print depicts the Spanish victory at Otumba on July 8, 1520, a pivotal moment in the conquest of Mexico by Hernán Cortés and his men. The image captures the intense battle between the Spanish soldiers, led by Cortés, and the Aztec forces under the command of Tlacochcalcatl, the Aztec governor of Huejotzingo. The scene is set against the backdrop of the Mexican landscape, with the ruins of the ancient Aztec city of Otumba visible in the background. The Spanish soldiers, dressed in their distinctive armor and wielding weapons such as swords, shields, and crossbows, charge forward with determination and resolve. The Aztec warriors, clad in feathered armor and armed with spears, shields, and slingshots, put up a fierce resistance. The victory at Otumba was a turning point in the Spanish conquest of Mexico. After a series of defeats, Cortés had regrouped and fortified his position at Tenochtitlán, the Aztec capital. He then marched south to confront the combined forces of several Aztec allies, including Tlacochcalcatl. The Spanish were outnumbered but managed to inflict heavy casualties on the Aztecs, thanks to their superior firepower and tactics. The victory at Otumba boosted the morale of the Spanish forces and paved the way for their eventual triumph over the Aztecs and the conquest of Mexico. This print is a testament to the courage and determination of the Spanish conquistadors and the indomitable spirit of the Aztec people during a time of great upheaval and change in the history of the Americas.
