This portrait captures Sir William Reynell Anson, 3rd Baronet (1843-1914), an esteemed British jurist and Liberal Unionist politician. In the year 1881, Anson assumed the esteemed role of Warden of All Souls College, one of the most prestigious academic institutions in the University of Oxford. Sir William Anson's impressive career began with his education at Eton College and Trinity College, Cambridge. He was called to the bar at the Inner Temple in 1866 and soon after, became a Queen's Counsel in 1882. Anson's legal expertise led him to serve as a judge on the Queen's Bench Division from 1894 until his retirement in 1910. As a Liberal Unionist politician, Anson held several prominent positions, including serving as Member of Parliament for Oxford University from 1885 to 1892. He was also a Privy Counselor from 1895 until his death. In this photograph, taken in 1901, Sir William Anson is depicted in a thoughtful and introspective pose, perhaps reflecting on the many accomplishments of his distinguished career.
