Born on October 1, 1852, in Calcutta, India, French joined the British Army in 1871 and quickly rose through the ranks, demonstrating exceptional leadership and tactical acumen. French's military career spanned several major conflicts, including the Second Anglo-Afghan War, the Anglo-Egyptian War, and the First World War. During the latter, he served as the Commander-in-Chief of the British Expeditionary Force, leading the defense of France against the German invasion in 1914. Although the Allied forces ultimately suffered a series of initial defeats, French's tenacious leadership and unwavering resolve inspired the troops and helped to rally the British forces during their darkest hour. Despite the eventual Allied victory, French's military strategy and tactics were subject to intense scrutiny and criticism, particularly for his decision to retreat from Mons and his perceived lack of coordination with French and Belgian forces. Nonetheless, his steadfast determination and unwavering commitment to the defense of France earned him the title of "The Butcher of Loos" and solidified his place in British military history.
