EDITORS COMMENTS
Sir Henry Creswicke Rawlinson (1810-1895), an esteemed orientalist and British government official, is depicted in this striking photograph taken in 1873. Rawlinson's significant contributions to the field of Iranian studies and his influential role in the British administration make him a pivotal figure in the history of Anglo-Iranian relations. Born in England, Rawlinson's interest in the East was ignited during his military service in India. He began studying Persian and Sanskrit, and his linguistic abilities soon gained him recognition. In 1835, he was appointed as the British Resident at the court of the Shah of Persia, a position that granted him unparalleled access to the inner workings of the Iranian government. During his time in Iran, Rawlinson made groundbreaking discoveries in the field of cuneiform inscriptions. He deciphered the Behistun Inscription, a monumental relief carved by Darius the Great in 522 BC, which contained the first known record of the Achaemenid Persian language. This achievement not only advanced the understanding of ancient Persian history but also paved the way for the deciphering of other ancient Middle Eastern languages. Rawlinson's work as a diplomat was equally noteworthy. He played a crucial role in the Anglo-Persian Treaty of 1857, which secured British influence in Iran for several decades. His tenure as the British Ambassador to Turkey from 1877 to 1880 further solidified his reputation as a key figure in British foreign policy. This photograph of Sir Henry Creswicke Rawlinson captures the distinguished gentleman and scholar in his later years. His legacy continues to shape the study of Iranian history and the understanding of the complex relationship between the East and the West.
