Sarah Siddons (nee Kemble), the renowned English actress, is captured in this stunning portrait as Belvidera in Otway's Venice. The image, preserved in the Mary Evans Picture Library, dates back to 1831, over 75 years after Siddons' debut on the London stage in 1755. Born into a theatrical family, Siddons followed in the footsteps of her famous father, actor-manager Roger Kemble, and her older sister, the actress Sarah Kemble Siddons. She made her acting debut at the age of 13, but it was her portrayal of Belvidera in Otway's Venice that truly established her reputation as a great tragic actress. Belvidera, a character from Otway's tragic play, is a wronged woman who seeks revenge on her unfaithful husband. Siddons' powerful performance in this role left audiences in awe, with one critic declaring that "the tears flowed from her eyes as if Nature herself had opened the fountains." This portrait captures the intensity and emotion of Siddons' performance as Belvidera.
