Savannah, Ga. vicinity. Shermans troops removing ammunition from Fort McAllister in wheelbarrows. Photograph of the War in the West. These photographs are of Sherman at the sea, December 1864. After marching through Georgia for a month, Sherman stormed Fort McAllister on December 13, 1864 and captured Savannah itself 8 days later. These seven views are limited to the former stronghold and its dismantling preparatory to Shermans further movement northward. This operation was ordered on December 24, and Gen. William B. Hazen 2d Division, 15th Corps and Maj. Thomas W. Osborn, Chief of Artillery, had it completed by December 29, storing the guns at Fort Pulaski. Date 1864 December

This photograph print transports us back in time to the Savannah, Ga. vicinity during the final days of the American Civil War in December 1864. The image depicts Union soldiers from Sherman's troops, under the command of General William B. Hazen and Major Thomas W. Osborn, diligently removing ammunition from Fort McAllister using wheelbarrows. After a month-long march through Georgia, General William T. Sherman's Union forces reached the strategic Fort McAllister on December 13, 1864. Eight days later, they captured Savannah itself, marking a significant victory for the Union. In preparation for Sherman's further movement northward, the dismantling of Fort McAllister was ordered on December 24, 1864. This collection of seven views is limited to the former stronghold and its dismantling. The soldiers meticulously gathered the fort's guns, which were later stored at Fort Pulaski. The photograph provides a glimpse into the aftermath of the storming of Fort McAllister and the Union's efforts to secure their victory in the Savannah campaign.
