This beautiful 17th century print depicts the biblical story of Samuel being presented to Eli, the priest, as recounted in the Old Testament book of 1 Samuel (1:24-28). In this poignant scene, an elderly Eli reaches out to cradle the young Samuel, who is being brought to him by his mother Hannah. Having prayed for years for a child, Hannah had made a vow that if God granted her request, she would dedicate the boy to the Lord's service. True to her word, she brought Samuel to Eli's temple in Shiloh to be raised as a Nazarite, a consecrated individual dedicated to God. The print, created around 1690, captures the tender moment between Eli and the child Samuel, as well as the reverence and devotion of Hannah. The artist masterfully portrays the contrast between the youthful innocence of the baby and the wisdom and age of Eli, emphasizing the importance of intergenerational care and the role of spiritual leaders in nurturing the next generation.
