This evocative image captures the youthful and pious visage of Saint Louis de Anjou, a French churchman and bishop of Toulouse, born in the late 13th century as the great-nephew of the revered King Louis IX. Saint Louis de Anjou's lineage granted him a unique position within the Church hierarchy at a young age, and he was consecrated as bishop of Toulouse in his twenties. The serene expression on his face in this print belies the tumultuous times in which he lived. Saint Louis de Anjou's tenure as bishop was marked by the Albigensian Crusade, a religious conflict that ravaged the Languedoc region of southern France. During this period, he worked tirelessly to promote peace and unity, earning the respect of both the Church and the people. Despite his promising start, Saint Louis de Anjou's life was cut tragically short. He died in 1297, at the age of just 23, leaving a legacy that was only beginning to unfold.
