EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the distinguished figure of Samuel Wilberforce, Bishop of Oxford and Winchester, who made history as a notable opponent of Charles Darwin's theory of natural selection. Born on January 26, 1805, in Exeter, England, Wilberforce was an influential clergyman and theologian of his time. He rose to prominence in the Church of England and held various prestigious positions, including the Dean of Ross and the Bishop of Oxford. In the late 1850s and 1860s, the debate surrounding Darwin's groundbreaking work, "On the Origin of Species," reached a fever pitch. Wilberforce, who was deeply committed to the teachings of the Bible, saw the theory of natural selection as a threat to religious beliefs. In 1860, he engaged in a famous public debate with Thomas Huxley, a strong supporter of Darwin's ideas, at the Oxford Museum of Natural History. This encounter, known as the "Battle of the Bishops," became a significant moment in the history of the scientific and religious discourse. Despite the controversy, Wilberforce continued to uphold his beliefs and wrote a series of articles in the "Quarterly Review" criticizing Darwin's theory. His opposition to natural selection did not waver, even when Darwin published "The Descent of Man" in 1871, which dealt with the application of natural selection to human evolution. Wilberforce passed away in 1873, leaving behind a legacy as a formidable opponent of Darwin's theory during a pivotal period in the history of science and religion. This photograph, taken in 1869, captures Bishop Wilberforce in his later years, with a stern expression and an air of authority. The image serves as a poignant reminder of the complex interplay between science, religion, and society during the Victorian era.
