This postcard, dated 1901, captures a moment in time as the Royal Lifeguard of Gothia, a prestigious Swedish military unit, goes about their daily duties in Stockholm. The lifeguards, dressed in their distinctive uniforms, are seen standing at attention, their red and blue coats adorned with gold braid and buttons, and their bearskin hats at a sharp angle. The lifeguards were an elite force, responsible for protecting the Swedish monarch and the royal family during their summer residence in Djurgården, an island located in the heart of Stockholm. The origins of the Royal Lifeguard of Gothia can be traced back to the 16th century, making it one of the oldest military units in Sweden. The lifeguards were originally tasked with patrolling the waters around Stockholm and protecting the city from enemy attacks. Over the centuries, their role evolved to include ceremonial duties and serving as the monarch's personal bodyguard. The lifeguards' uniforms have remained largely unchanged since the late 19th century, reflecting the rich history and tradition of this esteemed military unit. The bearskin hats, which are still worn today, were introduced in 1816 and are made from the hides of Finnish brown bears.
