EDITORS COMMENTS
This historic photograph captures the moment as the first Blackburn B-26 Botha I, registration number L6104, takes to the skies for its maiden flight on March 21, 1939. The Blackburn B-26 Botha was a twin-engine transport aircraft designed and manufactured by the Blackburn Aircraft Company in the United Kingdom. The Botha I was a significant development in aviation history, as it was the first twin-engine transport aircraft to be operated by the Royal Air Force (RAF). The Botha I was designed to meet the RAF's requirement for a medium transport aircraft that could carry troops, supplies, and equipment to forward operating bases. The aircraft was powered by two Rolls-Royce Buzzard engines, which provided a top speed of 195 miles per hour and a range of over 800 miles. The Botha I could carry a payload of up to 4,000 pounds and had a crew of three. The first flight of L6104 took place at Blackburn Airfield in Brough, East Yorkshire, and was piloted by Blackburn test pilot, J.E. Petty. The aircraft's successful maiden flight marked the beginning of a new era in military transport aviation and paved the way for the production of over 1,000 Botha I aircraft for the RAF during World War II. This photograph is a testament to the ingenuity and innovation of the Blackburn Aircraft Company and the RAF during a time of great change and development in aviation history. The Blackburn B-26 Botha I, L6104, remains an important part of aviation history and a symbol of the pioneering spirit that drove the advancement of military aviation technology.
