EDITORS COMMENTS
In this historic photograph, the first Belfast-built Short Stirling, registration number N6000, is being carefully rolled across a bridge towards the airport. The Short Stirling was a four-engine heavy bomber aircraft produced by Short Brothers in Belfast, Northern Ireland, during World War II. This particular aircraft, N6000, was the first to be built in the city, marking a significant milestone in the aviation industry of Belfast. The Short Stirling was a large and complex aircraft, with a wingspan of 102 feet and a length of 73 feet. It was designed to carry a heavy bomb load and had a crew of seven. The aircraft was powered by four Bristol Hercules engines, which provided a top speed of 225 miles per hour. The transportation of the newly built aircraft from the Short Brothers factory to the airport was a major undertaking. In this photograph, we see the aircraft being carefully maneuvered across a bridge, with a crowd of onlookers gathered to witness the event. The bridge, with its arches and supports, provides a striking contrast to the modern and sleek design of the Short Stirling. The successful rollout of N6000 marked the beginning of the production line for the Short Stirling, with many more of these aircraft being built in Belfast during the war. The Short Stirling went on to serve with distinction, playing a crucial role in the bombing campaigns over Europe. This photograph is a testament to the ingenuity and determination of the engineers and workers at Short Brothers, who built these magnificent aircraft in the face of great challenges and adversity.
