EDITORS COMMENTS
HMS Furious (47) c.11928: A Pioneering Carrier of Air Power This photograph captures the HMS Furious (47) in the late 1920s, showcasing her as a pioneering aircraft carrier that revolutionized naval warfare. The image, taken circa 1928, reveals the vessel's impressive size and the distinctive flight deck that would become the hub of her unique capabilities. The HMS Furious, launched in 1917, was the Royal Navy's first dedicated aircraft carrier. Initially serving as a battlecruiser, she was later converted to an aircraft carrier in 1922. The conversion included the installation of a 612-foot-long flight deck, which could accommodate up to 18 aircraft. This modification marked a significant shift in naval strategy, enabling the carrier to project air power beyond the reach of land-based aircraft. In this photograph, we see several Sopwith Sunderland flying boats moored alongside the carrier. These biplanes, with their distinctive hulls and wings, were among the first to operate from the HMS Furious. They were primarily used for reconnaissance, anti-submarine warfare, and, in some cases, as torpedo bombers. The aircraft's ability to take off and land on the carrier's flight deck expanded the reach and versatility of the Royal Navy. The HMS Furious's pioneering role in aircraft carrier operations paved the way for more advanced carriers, such as the Ark Royal and the Illustrious classes. This photograph serves as a testament to the ingenuity and innovation of the Royal Navy during the interwar period, demonstrating their commitment to staying at the forefront of naval technology and capabilities.
