EDITORS COMMENTS
"This evocative photograph captures the stern and weathered visage of Robert Patterson, an Irish-born American military commander who played a significant role in the Mexican Wars but ultimately failed as a general during the American Civil War. Born in 1792, Patterson immigrated to the United States as a young man and quickly rose through the ranks of the military, distinguishing himself in the War of 1812. In the 1840s, he was appointed as a brigadier general in the U.S. Army and sent to Mexico to fight in the Mexican-American War. Patterson led his troops with great success, earning the nickname "Old Wagon Head" for his distinctive bald pate. However, when the Civil War broke out in 1861, Patterson was given command of the Department of the Shenandoah in Virginia. Despite his previous military accomplishments, Patterson's leadership during the Civil War was lackluster at best. He failed to prevent Confederate forces from capturing Harpers Ferry, and was subsequently relieved of his command. Despite his failure as a Civil War general, Patterson's military career was not without merit. He served his country with distinction in several major conflicts, including the War of 1812 and the Mexican-American War. This photograph, taken likely in the late 1800s, captures the complex legacy of a man who served his country with honor but ultimately fell short in one of its greatest trials. The image serves as a poignant reminder of the complexities of history and the often unpredictable nature of human endeavor." Rights Managed from Mary Evans Prints Online. Not for commercial use.
