Between the years 1846 and 1850, Ballantyne worked as a clerk for the company, an experience that allowed him to immerse himself in the wild and untamed landscape of North America. Upon his return to Scotland, Ballantyne began to write, drawing upon his adventures and the stories he had heard from other fur traders. His first novel, "The Young Fur-Traders," was published in 1852 and was an instant success.
