EDITORS COMMENTS
This engraved portrait depicts the Reverend Patrick Bronte (1777-1861), the father of literary legends Anne, Charlotte, and Emily Bronte. The image, created in 1893, is a faithful representation of the clergyman as he appeared in his later years. Born on November 30, 1777, in Ireland, Patrick Bronte was the father of three talented children who would go on to leave indelible marks on English literature. Patrick Bronte's life was marked by hardship and struggle. He was the eldest of seven children in a large Irish Catholic family. After the death of his mother, he was sent to live with an uncle in England, where he received a meager education. He later became a clergyman in the Church of England, serving various parishes in Yorkshire. Despite the challenges he faced, Patrick Bronte provided a nurturing and supportive environment for his children. He encouraged their love of reading and writing, and instilled in them a deep appreciation for the natural world. The moors surrounding their parsonage in Haworth, Yorkshire, would become a source of inspiration for the sisters' groundbreaking novels, "Jane Eyre," "Wuthering Heights," and "Against the Wind." This portrait, created in 1893 by an unknown engraver, offers a glimpse into the life of a man whose influence extended far beyond his own time. Though he lived from 1777 to 1861, Patrick Bronte's impact on English literature remains as vibrant and relevant today as it was during the Victorian era. Important historical figures like Patrick Bronte remind us of the power of family, education, and the written word to shape the course of history.
