This 19th century engraving depicts a Mercedarian Friar, a member of the Royal and Military Order of Mercy, in deep devotion before an open Bible. The Mercedarians, also known as the Order of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mercy, were a Catholic religious order founded in the 13th century in Spain. The Order was dedicated to the ransom of captives and the protection of the Holy Land. The Friar is dressed in the traditional Mercedarian habit, which includes a long brown robe with a white scapular and a distinctive red cross on the chest. The Order's arms, featuring the image of the Blessed Virgin Mary holding the Christ Child, are prominently displayed on the wall behind him. The Friar's intense focus on the Bible underscores the importance of learning and prayer in the Mercedarian way of life.
