R. N. M. D. S. F Station at St. Anthony, Newfoundland
The Doctor and Nurses in Winter Costume at the Royal Mission to Deep Sea Fishermen Station at St. Anthony, Newfoundland. St. Anthonys most influential historic figure is Dr. Wilfred Grenfell. Born in 1865, Grenfell entered the London Hospital Medical School in 1883. While in London, Grenfell heard the American evangelist Dwight L. Moody - this event inspired him to a life of Christian charity. A memb er of the Royal National Mission To Deep Sea Fishermen, Grenfell was sent to investigate the conditions of fishermen in the Labrador region in 1892. He was said to be the first doctor to reach the region. He would later establish a string of hospitals, cooperatives and schools for people in remote Newfoundland and Labrador towns. He chose Red Bay as the headquarters of the Grenfell Mission in 1900

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the spirit of humanitarianism and resilience in the harsh winter landscape of St. Anthony, Newfoundland, circa 1909. The image features Dr. Wilfred Grenfell (1865-1940), a British-born doctor who dedicated his life to serving the people of Newfoundland and Labrador. Grenfell, dressed in a thick winter coat and fur hat, is seen examining a patient with the assistance of two nurses, also dressed for the cold, wearing snow shoes. The trio stands in front of the Royal Mission to Deep Sea Fishermen Station at St. Anthony, a testament to Grenfell's enduring impact on the community. Born in London, Grenfell was inspired by American evangelist Dwight L. Moody to pursue a life of Christian charity. In 1892, he was sent by the Royal National Mission To Deep Sea Fishermen to investigate the living conditions of fishermen in the Labrador region, becoming the first doctor to reach the area. Over the next several decades, Grenfell established a network of hospitals, cooperatives, and schools in remote Newfoundland and Labrador towns, with Red Bay serving as the headquarters of the Grenfell Mission in 1900. This powerful image encapsulates the dedication and compassion of Dr. Grenfell and his team, who braved the harsh winter conditions to bring essential medical care and support to those in need. Their legacy continues to inspire generations, making St. Anthony a significant historic site in Newfoundland and Labrador's rich history.
