EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the moment when two cricket legends, R.A. Duff and Victor Trumper, of the Australian cricket team, stepped out to bat at the start of the second innings during the historic Test match against England at Bramall Lane, Sheffield, in July 1902. The image, taken during one of the most iconic moments in Australian cricket history, shows Duff in his blue and gold uniform, looking focused and determined, while Trumper, on the right, displays a calm and confident demeanor. The crowd at Bramall Lane, eagerly anticipating the outcome of the match, can be seen in the background. The Test match, which took place from the 15th to the 18th of July, was a crucial one for the Australians, who were trailing 0-1 in the series after losing the first Test at Old Trafford. The team, led by captain Pete McIntyre, needed a strong performance to stay alive in the series. Duff, a left-handed batsman, made a disappointing 1 run in this innings, while Trumper, a right-handed batsman and one of the greatest Australian batsmen of all time, scored a valuable 62 runs. Trumper's innings was instrumental in setting up a total of 255 runs for the Australians, which proved to be a challenging target for the English team. The Australians went on to win the match by 78 runs, thanks in large part to Trumper's heroics and some excellent bowling performances by Hugh Trumble and Fred Spofforth. The victory gave the team a much-needed boost and helped them turn the series around, eventually leading to a 3-2 win over England. This photograph is a testament to the rich history of cricket and the enduring legacy of two of its greatest champions, R.A. Duff and Victor Trumper.
