The illustration is part of the extensive collection amassed by John Reeves during his travels to Canton, China, in the 19th century. Reeves, a British tea inspector, had a keen interest in natural history and assembled a remarkable collection of Chinese drawings, which is now housed in the Natural History Museum in London.
