EDITORS COMMENTS
In this enchanting photograph, Princess Theodora and Princess Cecile of Greece, two of the four elder sisters of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, are seen playing together as children in a sunlit room. The sisters, dressed in elegant dresses and matching headbands, gaze at each other with affectionate smiles, their youthful innocence and sisterly bond on full display. Princess Theodora, later Margravine of Baden, was born on February 30, 1906, in Athens, Greece, to Prince Andrew of Greece and Princess Alice of Battenberg. Her younger sister, Princess Cecile, later Grand Duchess of Hesse-Darmstadt, was born on December 11, 1911. The sisters were raised in a privileged environment, surrounded by their royal family and the grandeur of their Greek heritage. The photograph, taken around 1917, captures a moment of joy and sibling connection between the two sisters. Princess Theodora and Princess Cecile would go on to lead very different lives. Princess Theodora married Prince Maximilian of Baden in 1932 and became Margravine of Baden. Tragically, she died by suicide in 1969. Princess Cecile married Prince Louis of Hesse-Darmstadt in 1931 and became Grand Duchess of Hesse-Darmstadt. She died in exile in Egypt in 1937. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the sisters' childhood and the bond they shared as daughters of a royal family and sisters to the future Duke of Edinburgh. It is a testament to the enduring power of sisterhood and the memories of a simpler time in history.
