EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning watercolor painting by the renowned Dutch naturalist artist JG Keulemans, featured in Sir Walter Lawry Buller's "A History of the Birds of New Zealand" Vol.4, beautifully captures the Polynesian Megapode (Megapodius pritchardi) in both its young and adult forms. The Polynesian Megapode, also known as the Polynesian Scrubfowl or Pitchard's Megapode, is a unique and intriguing bird native to the Pacific Islands. The young Polynesian Megapode, depicted on the left, is shown with its downy feathers, still retaining the grayish-brown coloration typical of juvenile birds. Its eyes are closed, indicating that it is likely still in the nest, incubated by the heat of volcanic soil. The adult bird on the right is shown in its full glory, with its glossy black plumage, distinctive red eyes, and large, powerful legs. The Megapode is a member of the Megapodiidae family, which also includes the Australian Brushturkey and the Moundbuilder of the Pacific. The Polynesian Megapode is an omnivorous bird, feeding on a variety of fruits, seeds, insects, and even small vertebrates. It is known for its unusual incubation behavior, where the eggs are incubated by the heat of volcanic soil rather than being brooded by the parents. This adaptation allows the Megapode to avoid the need to sit on the nest continuously, reducing the risk of predation. This exquisite painting not only showcases the beauty of the Polynesian Megapode but also provides a glimpse into the natural history of this fascinating bird, captured by the skilled brush of JG Keulemans over a century ago.
