This evocative photograph captures the pipers of the 5th Infantry Battalion of the Egyptian Army, proudly assembled in Alexandria in 1915, on the occasion of the arrival of Sir Henry McMahon, the new British High Commissioner for Egypt. The pipers, dressed in their traditional Scottish Highland uniforms, acclimatised to the Egyptian climate, stand at attention, their bagpipes slung over their shoulders. Sir Henry McMahon, a seasoned diplomat and politician, had been appointed to replace Sir Eldon Gorst, who had been dismissed by the British government due to his pro-Egyptian sympathies. The First World War was raging in Europe, and Egypt, a key strategic location due to its proximity to the Suez Canal, was of great importance to the British Empire. The arrival of Sir Henry McMahon marked a new chapter in the British administration of Egypt, and this photograph provides a unique glimpse into the military and cultural fusion that characterized the Egyptian Army during this period.
