Piper Daniel Laidlaw V.C.: The Heroic Bagpiper of Loos (September 25, 1915) This evocative black-and-white photograph captures the moment of bravery and heroism displayed by Piper Daniel Laidlaw during the Battle of Loos in World War I. On this fateful day, September 25, 1915, Laidlaw, a Scottish piper serving with the 1st/7th Royal Scots Fusiliers, demonstrated exceptional courage and leadership in the face of intense enemy fire and gas attacks. As the bombardment reached its peak, Laidlaw noticed that his company was becoming disheartened due to the effects of gas. Unfazed, he climbed atop the parapet and began to play his bagpipes, inspiring his comrades with the haunting melodies. The effect was immediate, and the company rallied, charging out of the trench to join the assault. Piper Laidlaw's heroic actions did not go unnoticed. His inspiring performance galvanized his fellow soldiers, and they pressed forward, gaining valuable ground against the enemy. However, as he continued to play, Laidlaw was wounded by shrapnel. Despite his injury, he refused to be evacuated, insisting that another piper take his place. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the heroic actions of Piper Daniel Laidlaw V.C., who, through the power of music, inspired his comrades to overcome the horrors of the battlefield. His bravery and selflessness earned him the Victoria Cross, the highest military decoration in the British honors system, making him a true hero of the Western Front during World War I.
