EDITORS COMMENTS
Plate 417 from John James Audubon's renowned work, "Birds of America," showcases three distinct woodpecker species: Picoides villosus (Downy Woodpecker), Picoides tridactylus (Three-toed Woodpecker), and Picoides pubescens (Hairy Woodpecker). This hand-coloured aquatint print, created between 1835 and 1838, is a testament to the meticulous detail and artistry of the era. Engraved, printed, and coloured by R. Havell (& Son) of London, the image captures the unique features of each bird. The Downy Woodpecker, Picoides villosus, is the smallest woodpecker in North America, easily identified by its white spots on the black wings and a red patch on the back of its head. The Downy's long bill is relatively short, and its legs are short and unfeathered. The Eurasian Three-toed Woodpecker, Picoides tridactylus, is a European species with a distinctive red crown and nape, black and white striped back, and three toes on each foot. The Three-toed Woodpecker's bill is long and chisel-like, with a distinctive white stripe down the middle. The Hairy Woodpecker, Picoides pubescens, is a medium-sized woodpecker with a black and white striped back, a black head, and a white underbelly. The Hairy Woodpecker's most distinguishing feature is its long, bristly feathers on the nape of its neck, giving it a 'hairy' appearance. These woodpeckers are shown in a natural setting, foraging for food. The Downy Woodpecker and Hairy Woodpecker are feeding on tree bark, while the Three-toed Woodpecker is perched on a branch, observing its surroundings. The intricate anatomy of these birds is beautifully captured in this stunning illustration, a masterpiece of the art of ornithology.
