EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning hand-colored lithograph depicts the Resplendent Quetzal, Pharomachrus mocinno, a vibrant and iconic bird species native to the cloud forests of Central America. The image is taken from John Gould's renowned ornithological series, "The Birds of New Guinea," published between 1875 and 1888. The plate features both the male and female quetzals perched on separate branches, showcasing their distinct plumage and anatomy. The male quetzal, illustrated on the left, is characterized by its long, iridescent green and gold tail feathers, which can reach up to 1.2 meters in length. Its head is adorned with a red crown and chest, while its body is predominantly green. The female quetzal, on the right, has a more subdued appearance, with a green body, a grey head, and a white underbelly. Her crest is shorter and less colorful than the male's. John Gould's meticulous attention to detail is evident in the intricate illustration of the quetzals' feathers, which appear lifelike and textured. The background is kept simple, allowing the birds to take center stage. The quetzals' anatomy is also accurately portrayed, with their strong legs and sharp beaks evident. This illustration is a testament to the artistry and scientific precision of the 19th-century ornithological community, represented here by the collaborative efforts of John Gould and his team, including his wife Elizabeth Gould and naturalist Jonathan Elphick. The Resplendent Quetzal remains an enduring symbol of the natural world's beauty and diversity, inspiring awe and admiration to this day.
