EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph taken during an open day at RAF Halton in the 1960s, we find ourselves in the presence of several iconic aircraft that left indelible marks on the annals of aviation history. At the forefront of the image is the Percival P.56 Provost T.Mk.1, serial number 7698M (msn PAC-56-056), formerly known as WV493. Delivered to the Royal Air Force (RAF) on October 28, 1953, this aircraft was initially assigned the maintenance serial 7696M for use at RAF Halton. After a distinguished military career, it was eventually sold and given the civilian registration G-BDYG before retiring to the National Museum of Flight at East Fortune, East Lothian. Accompanying the Percival Provost is a Hawker Hunter F Mk.4, serial number 7941M (XF369 - msn HABL003098), which first flew on February 18, 1956, and was delivered on March 8, 1956. This Hunter was later refurbished as G-9-351 and sold to the Singapore Air Defence Command, where it served as Hawker Hunter FR.74B 538. The photograph also captures the majestic silhouettes of two Avro Vulcan B.Mk.1 bombers, which graced the rather small grass airfield at Halton. The presence of these three remarkable aircraft at the open day is truly amazing, as all three - the Provost, Hunter, and the two Vulcans - were flown into the modest airfield. The Vulcans, along with the Comet in the background, underscore the significance of this event, which brought together some of the most iconic aircraft of the era.
