EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph from the Mary Evans Picture Library, we witness the British Aerospace Tracked Rapier system taking center stage at the British Army Equipment Exhibition held in Aldershot from the 23rd to the 27th of June in 1980. The Tracked Rapier, a British-designed and manufactured anti-tank missile system, was a significant addition to the British military's arsenal during the Cold War era. The image captures the essence of the exhibition, with the Tracked Rapier system proudly displayed on a grassy area, surrounded by a crowd of onlookers. Soldiers in uniform, some wearing helmets and carrying weapons, are seen examining the vehicle from various angles, while others engage in animated conversations with their colleagues. In the background, a row of trees provides a picturesque backdrop to the scene. The Tracked Rapier, which was manufactured by British Aerospace (now BAE Systems), was a versatile and powerful anti-tank weapon system. It was designed to be transported on the back of a truck and could be quickly deployed in the field. The system consisted of a command and observation vehicle, a launcher vehicle, and a number of missile pods, each carrying eight anti-tank missiles. The missiles were guided to their targets using a laser beam, making them highly accurate and effective against armored targets. The British Army Equipment Exhibition was an important event in the military calendar, providing an opportunity for the British military to showcase its latest equipment and technology to the public and industry experts. The Tracked Rapier system was just one of many impressive displays at the exhibition, which also featured aircraft, helicopters, artillery, and other military vehicles. This photograph provides a fascinating glimpse into the past, offering a unique insight into the military technology of the time and the excitement surrounding it.
