EDITORS COMMENTS
The Pergamon Altar, a grand architectural masterpiece of the Hellenistic period, stands as a testament to the artistic and cultural achievements of ancient Asia Minor. Commissioned by Eumenes II Soter around 164-156 BC, this marble and limestone structure was created by artists of the renowned Pergamon school. The East Frieze of the altar, now housed in the Pergamon Museum in Berlin, Germany, depicts the epic battle between the gods and the giants, or Gigantomachy. At the heart of this scene, Leto, the goddess of motherhood and childbirth, fiercely engages in combat against the titan Tityos. Armed with a torch, she strikes out with determination and resolve. By her side, her son Apollo, the god of the sun and prophecy, wields a bow and arrow. Having just shot the giant Ephialtes, Apollo stands victoriously over his fallen foe, with Ephialtes' lifeless body lying at his feet. The intricate relief carvings on the Pergamon Altar showcase the skill and artistry of the ancient Greek sculptors. The gods and giants are depicted in high relief, their muscles taut and their expressions filled with emotion. The animals and mythical creatures that accompany them add to the dynamic and chaotic scene of the battle. This magnificent work of art, a symbol of the rich cultural heritage of the ancient world, continues to captivate and inspire visitors to the Pergamon Museum in Berlin, offering a glimpse into the myths, legends, and artistic achievements of the Hellenistic age.
