This historic image captures the moment of Pedro V's inauguration as the King of Portugal on September 1, 1855, at the Praça do Comércio in Lisbon. Pedro, the eldest son of Queen Maria II and her consort, King Fernando II, ascended to the throne following his father's abdication. The House of Braganza, which had ruled Portugal since 1640, was once again in the hands of its rightful heir. The grand ceremony was held in the presence of the Portuguese nobility, foreign diplomats, and a large crowd of citizens. Pedro, dressed in the royal robes and wearing the Crown of Portugal, took the oath to uphold the constitution and govern justly. The inauguration marked the beginning of a new era in Portuguese history, one that would be marked by political stability and economic progress.
