This historic photograph captures the moment in July 1901 when Brazilian aviation pioneer, Alberto Santos-Dumont, attempted to fly around the iconic Eiffel Tower in Paris in his airship, the Demoiselle. Santos-Dumont had been challenged by the French newspaper Le Matin to complete a circuit around the Tower within 30 minutes to win a substantial prize. The aviator, who was known for his groundbreaking achievements in aviation, was determined to accept the challenge and make history. In this image, we see Santos-Dumont, dressed in a stylish suit and hat, standing confidently beside his Demoiselle as it is tethered to the ground. The Eiffel Tower looms majestically in the background, its iron lattice structure casting intricate shadows on the ground below.
