This historic photograph captures the momentous occasion of the first women graduates from Somerville College, University of Oxford, in 1920. The image is a testament to the groundbreaking achievements of these pioneering women, who defied societal norms and paved the way for future generations of female scholars. Located in the heart of Oxford, Somerville College was founded in 1879 as a women's college, making it one of the first in the United Kingdom to offer higher education to women on an equal footing with men. The college's founders, the novelist and social reformer Marianne Thornton and the philosopher and educationist Henrietta Barnett, were determined to provide women with the same opportunities as their male counterparts, and their vision was realized in this graduation ceremony.
