EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite handcolored copperplate stipple engraving, created between 1816 and 1830, showcases two wading birds native to Europe: the Northern Lapwing (Vanellus vanellus) and the Eurasian Oystercatcher (Haematopus ostralegus). The illustration, taken from Dumont de Sainte-Croix's Dictionary of Natural Science: Ornithology, was produced in Paris, France. The meticulous work was executed by artist Jean Gabriel Pretre, who was a painter of natural history at Empress Josephine's zoo, and later became an artist to the Museum of Natural History. The Northern Lapwing, also known as the Green Plover or Peewit, is a medium-sized wading bird with distinctive black and white plumage, a red eye, and a long, down-curved bill. This bird is a resident breeder in Europe, Asia, and North Africa, and is known for its distinctive display flight, during which it produces a loud, piercing "pee-wit" call. The Eurasian Oystercatcher, also called the European Oystercatcher, is a large, robust wading bird with a distinctive, heavy, red beak and long, yellow legs. It is a resident breeder in the coastal areas of Europe, Asia, and North Africa, and feeds primarily on mollusks, especially oysters, mussels, and limpets. The intricate detail and vibrant colors in this engraving are a testament to the skill and artistry of the artist and engraver, as well as the advanced techniques of the time. The illustration provides a fascinating glimpse into the natural history of these two remarkable birds, and serves as a reminder of the rich biodiversity of Europe during the early 19th century.
