EDITORS COMMENTS
The Statue of Liberty, officially named "Liberty Enlightening the World," is an iconic symbol of freedom and democracy, gifted from the people of France to the United States in 1885. This magnificent sculpture, designed by French artist Frederic Auguste Bartholdi, stands tall on Liberty Island in New York Harbor, overlooking the Hudson River and the bustling city of New York. The statue, which depicts a robed woman holding a torch in her right hand and a tablet in her left, represents Libertas, the Roman goddess of freedom. The torch symbolizes the enlightenment of the world, while the tablet in her left hand inscribed with the date of the American Declaration of Independence, July 4, 1776, represents the ideals of liberty and democracy that the United States was founded upon. The Statue of Liberty was a gift from the people of France to the American people as a symbol of friendship and solidarity between the two nations. The construction of the statue was a massive undertaking, with over 200,000 pounds of copper used in its construction. The statue was assembled in France and then disassembled and shipped to the United States in over 300 individual pieces. The statue was dedicated on October 28, 1886, in a grand ceremony attended by over 100,000 people. Since then, it has become a symbol of hope and freedom for millions of people around the world. The Statue of Liberty has welcomed over 120 million visitors since it opened to the public in 1886, making it one of the most visited tourist attractions in the world. This photograph, taken around 1885, captures the Statue of Liberty in its early years, standing proudly on Liberty Island, a beacon of hope and freedom for the world to see.
