This evocative print depicts the momentous events at the strong castle of Ventadour in France during the year 1390. The scene captures the surrender of the castle, which had been under siege for an extended period. The defeated defenders, clad in armor and bearing the scars of battle, can be seen in the foreground, bowing before the victorious army led by the Duke of Berry. The Duke, a prominent figure in French politics at the time, is shown on horseback, raising his hand in a gesture of acceptance. The castle of Ventadour, perched atop a rocky outcrop, had been a symbol of resistance against the expanding influence of the French monarchy. Its strategic location made it a valuable prize, and numerous attempts had been made to take it over the years. However, the tenacity of its defenders had kept it in their hands. The siege of Ventadour began in earnest in the spring of 1390, with the French army laying siege to the castle. The defenders held out for several months, but their supplies were running low, and their morale was flagging. Faced with the prospect of a long and brutal siege or surrender, the defenders chose the latter. The print captures the poignant moment of surrender, with the defeated defenders handing over the keys to the castle to the Duke of Berry. The event marked a significant shift in the balance of power in the region, with the French monarchy consolidating its control over the area.
