EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image from 1670 depicts a plan for the construction of Les Invalides in Paris, a monumental architectural project initiated by King Louis XIV of France. The site, previously known as the Hôtel des Invalides, was to be transformed into a grand hospital and retirement home for disabled soldiers who had bravely served their country. The intricately detailed drawing reveals the extensive layout of the complex, which included a church, a hospital, a chapel, and a large courtyard. The church, now renowned as the Church of Saint-Louis des Invalides, was designed by Libéral Bruant and Louis Le Vau, and was intended to be the centerpiece of the complex. The hospital buildings, arranged around the courtyard, were designed to accommodate up to 4,000 soldiers, providing them with medical care, food, and shelter. The construction of Les Invalides was a testament to Louis XIV's commitment to his soldiers and his desire to provide for their wellbeing, both during and after their military service. The project was also a reflection of the king's grandiose vision for his capital city, which was undergoing a period of extensive urban development during this time. The completion of Les Invalides in 1676 marked a significant milestone in the history of military welfare and care, setting a precedent for other European countries to follow suit. Today, the complex stands as a symbol of French military history and a testament to the enduring legacy of Louis XIV's reign.
