EDITORS COMMENTS
This series of photographs, taken in Japan during the year 1874, offers a rare and intriguing glimpse into the traditional tea cultivation process that had been practiced in the country for centuries. The art of tea production in Japan, rooted in both cultural significance and spiritual connection, was a labor-intensive and meticulous endeavor. In these images, we witness the various stages of tea cultivation, from the planting and tending of the tea plants, to the careful picking of the tender leaves. The photographs depict the lush, verdant tea fields stretching out across the rolling hillsides, with the tea plants neatly arranged in rows, their leaves a vibrant green against the earth. The tea pickers, dressed in traditional Japanese clothing, can be seen carefully selecting only the finest leaves, ensuring that each harvest would yield the highest quality tea. The leaves are plucked with great care, often by hand, to avoid damaging the delicate buds and young leaves. The preparation of the tea leaves for consumption is also shown in these photographs. The leaves are spread out to dry in the sun, their fragrant aroma filling the air. Once dry, they are carefully sorted and processed, with the finest leaves being reserved for the most esteemed tea ceremonies. These photographs offer a unique and fascinating look into the tea cultivation process in Japan during the late 1800s, a time when the industry was undergoing significant changes and modernization. Despite the passage of time, the traditional methods of tea production continue to be cherished and practiced in Japan, making this series a valuable historical record of an enduring cultural tradition.
