EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative 17th century print depicts a hysterical nun, her face contorted in anguish and her eyes wide with fear. Dressed in the traditional habit of the time, she is shown breaking free from her restraints, her arms outstretched as if to ward off unseen forces. The expression on her face is one of intense distress and despair, her body trembling with the force of her convulsions. The other nuns in the convent recoil in terror, their faces a mixture of shock and fear. One covers her mouth in horror, another crosses herself in prayer, while a third tries to restrain the hysterical nun once more. The atmosphere in the convent is one of chaos and confusion, with the sisters unsure of how to deal with their sister's sudden and inexplicable behavior. The belief in possession by demons was a common belief during the 17th century, particularly in religious communities. Nuns, in particular, were thought to be susceptible to possession due to their secluded and introspective way of life. The hysterical nun in this print may be experiencing an altered state of consciousness, brought on by stress, trauma, or even a genuine belief in the supernatural. Regardless of the cause, the nun's behavior is causing great alarm and distress within the convent. The sisters are at a loss as to how to help their sister, and the fear of the unknown is palpable. This print offers a glimpse into the intense emotional and spiritual turmoil that could occur within the confines of a 17th century convent, and the profound impact that such events could have on the community as a whole.
