This handcoloured lithograph depicts the enchanting figure of Mlle. Julia Bennati, a vivandiere or sutler, dressed in the traditional attire of a French Guard's companion during a masquerade ball in late 19th century Paris. With an air of playful mischief, Mlle. Bennati carries a barrel of rum balanced gracefully on her head, while in her other hand she holds a glass, ready to take a sip. Dressed in the vibrant red and gold uniform of a Vivandiere, complete with a feathered headdress and a sash adorned with the insignia of the Garde Francaise, Mlle. Bennati embodies the spirit of Parisian theatrics and comedy. Her costume, inspired by the popular comic opera "Les Noces de Dolivette" by Chivot and Duru, was a common sight on the stages of Parisian theatres, such as the Théâtre des Bouffes and the Opéra-Comique. Mlle. Bennati's portrayal of a Vivandiere is a nod to the historical role of these women during wars, who followed the armies and sold food, drink, and other supplies to the soldiers. However, in this context, she is simply a comic character, a singer and a dancer, bringing joy and laughter to the Parisian audience.
