EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured lithograph depicts two stunningly beautiful and distinctive tropical birds, the Toco Toucan (Ramphastos toco) and the Ariel Toucan, also known as the Channel-billed Toucan (Ramphastos vitellinus). The image is taken from Th. Lejeune's Complete Works of Buffon, published in Brussels in 1837. The Toco Toucan, with its vibrant red, yellow, and black plumage, is the larger of the two birds, reaching lengths of up to 50 cm. Its distinctive bill, which can measure up to 48 cm long, is a remarkable feature, used for both foraging and displaying to potential mates. The Toco Toucan is native to Central and South America, primarily found in the rainforests of the Amazon Basin. The Ariel Toucan, on the other hand, is smaller in size, measuring around 38 cm in length, and is characterized by its bright orange bill with a distinctive black tip. Its plumage is primarily green with white spots, and it is native to the tropical rainforests of Central and South America. Both toucans are important members of their respective ecosystems, playing a role in seed dispersal and insect control. Their striking appearance has made them popular subjects in ornithology and natural history, and this beautiful lithograph is a testament to their enduring allure. This handcoloured lithograph is a rare and exquisite example of the intricate detail and artistry of 19th-century natural history illustration. The use of vibrant colors and precise shading brings the birds to life, allowing us to appreciate their beauty and unique features up close. This piece would make an excellent addition to any collection of natural history or ornithology, and serves as a reminder of the rich biodiversity of the tropical rainforests of the world.
