EDITORS COMMENTS
This chromolithograph, entitled "Syphilis: A Visual Representation of the Progression and Treatment of the Disease," is an excerpt from the first American edition of Auguste Cullerier's "Precis iconographique des maladies veneriennes," published in 1868 by Henry C. Lea in Philadelphia. The illustrations in this atlas were produced by T. Sinclaire. The series of images depict various stages of syphilis, a sexually transmitted infection that was a major public health concern during the 19th century. The first image (1) shows the diffused papular syphilide before treatment, characterized by the appearance of small, raised bumps on the body. The second image (2) illustrates the same individual after treatment with mercury, which was a common remedy at the time, revealing the development of ecthyma, or necrotic lesions, as a result of the treatment. The third image (3) displays papular syphilide with scales on the back, while the fourth image (4) depicts syphilitic lichen on the sides and arms. The lichen, a type of rash, is characterized by its flat-topped, scaly, and discolored appearance. These images provide a fascinating glimpse into the medical understanding and representation of syphilis during the late 19th century. It is important to note that while this illustration is a valuable historical resource, it is not intended for use in modern medical diagnosis or treatment. This and intriguing visual record of syphilis and its symptoms serves as a reminder of the importance of continued research and advancements in the field of medicine. The images in this chromolithograph are not only a testament to the scientific illustration of the time but also a reminder of the evolving nature of medical knowledge and the importance of ongoing research and innovation.
