This stunning chromolithograph depicts the rare and endangered Short Haired Paphiopedilum Orchid, scientifically known as Paphiopedilum ciliolare (formerly Cypripedium ciliolare). The image was created by the renowned Belgian botanical illustrator Paul de Pannemaeker for Jean Linden's Horticole Illustrations, published in Brussels in 1884. The Short Haired Paphiopedilum Orchid is a tropical plant native to the forests of Borneo and Sumatra. It is characterized by its small, compact size and short, ciliate (hair-like) labellum, which gives the orchid its specific epithet "ciliolare." The plant's vibrant, mottled leaves contrast beautifully with the delicate, pale green and pink hues of its flowers. Unfortunately, this exquisite orchid is now considered endangered due to habitat loss and over-collection for the horticultural trade.
