EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-colored copperplate engraving, titled "Shoes, Boots and Sandals of Ancient Rome," offers a fascinating glimpse into the diverse footwear of the Roman civilization. The intricately detailed illustration showcases an array of footwear, each with its unique design and purpose. In the foreground, we find a Cothurnus boot, a high, heavy boot with a distinctive upturned toe, often worn by actors in ancient Roman theater. Next to it is a rustic sandal, a simple and practical design, suitable for everyday use in rural areas. An open-toe shoe, with its elegant and minimalist design, is depicted in the third slot. Moving on, we encounter the Centurion's sandal, a sturdy and functional design, featuring a hobnail sole for added traction during marches. The spiked sandal for marching, number five, is another military design, with metal spikes on the sole for superior grip on rough terrain. The nailed sandal sole, number six, is a close-up view of the sole of a Roman sandal, revealing the intricate pattern of nails used to secure the sole to the upper part of the shoe. The seventh position holds a simple shoe sandal, while the eighth spot is occupied by an Emperor's boot, a grand and ornate design, befitting the status of the Roman ruler. The ninth position features an ornamented open-toe boot, a stylish and feminine design, adorned with intricate patterns and decorations. Lastly, we have the Dacian boot, a high, laced boot with a pointed toe, commonly worn by the Dacian people of ancient Romania. This engraving, taken from J. Sparkes Hall's "Book of the Feet, History of Boots and Shoes," published in New York in 1847, provides a captivating glimpse into the rich and diverse world of Roman footwear.
